Nina and the Wolf

Hannie Rayson (Melbourne) | Nina Wei (Melbourne)

Our project for the Asia TOPA Virtual LAB laid the foundations for a bi-lingual, one-woman biographic show written and performed by Nina Wei with dramaturgy by Hannie Rayson.

Nina is a first-generation migrant from Beijing, China, living in Melbourne. During the Melbourne lockdown, Melburnians were not allowed to travel more than 5kms from their homes. So the Virtual LAB was as essential for us as it might have been if Nina was in Beijing!

We have decided to build the show on eight key events which tell the story of Nina and her family: a journey from the Cultural Revolution in China to Point Cook in Melbourne, where a global pandemic has meant that she is living with both her parents for the first time in 30 years.

The surge of history which has created modern China is told through the trials and fortunes of one small family.
