Welcome the greatest literary show on earth to Australia's City of Literature at the spectacular JLF Melbourne Opening Night Gala!
Melbourne Writers Festival joins forces with Jaipur Literature Festival to present JLF Melbourne, an exciting pop-up festival that transports the magic of India’s biggest literary celebration to Fed Square.
Kick off the festivities at the Gala, where Sanjeev Sanyal will explore the state of India Now in a keynote address. Sanyal is an internationally acclaimed economist, bestselling author and an urban theorist, who was named Young Global Leader 2010 by the World Economic Forum. He has authored several books, including The Indian Renaissance, exploring India’s recent economic rise after a long period of decline, and was awarded the inaugural International Indian Achievers Award for contributions to literature in 2014.
Experience a special honouring of the land from an Indigenous and Indian perspective, in a unique collaborative Pranam ceremony between renowned Indian performers of Melbourne, Tara Rajkumar OAM, Shobha Sekhar, Nithya Gopu Solomon and Priya Srinivasan, and respected Keerray Woorroong women Vicki Couzens and Yaraan Bundle.
Then let rapper Sofia Ashraf and poet Sampurna Chattarji transport you to another world as they perform their powerful prose.
Finally, join us for an incredible after-party and rub shoulders with international artists, with music, food and our new favourite – chaijito cocktails, courtesy of a pop-up chai bar! Indulge in food and drink as we celebrate the best of Indian and Australian writing and ideas.
Don’t forget to join us on Sunday 12 February for a full day of free talks, performances, music and poetry at Fed Square.
Ticket price includes drinks and canapés.
JLF Melbourne is supported by Arts Centre Melbourne and the Sidney Myer Fund; the Victorian Government through Creative Victoria, the UNESCO Melbourne City of Literature and the Victorian Multicultural Commission; and the Australian Government through the Australia-India Council of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
